Farwell for now

This semester is now coming to a close. The Union has printed it's final copy and June 1, Warrior Life Magazine will be on campus too! It has flown by like usual and been stressful, fun and most of all worth while.

There have been major struggles over these past few months, mainly with deadlines. Over all the paper has been a success even though these may not have been our strongest over the years. We leave great ideas and a high standard for the next news team to uphold.

As for myself I can't say if I will be back again. I want to because I love EC and The Union. I have a ridiculous amount of school spirit, but I have to leave it eventually. But I have to finish some classes first. This was the most I was able to get involved with students, faculty and the campus. I hope to be back soon.

All-Stars Part Two

Here are the rest of the baseball card style images of EC Warrior Sports. It was a pleasure to meet all these dynamic students who I would see walking through campus and had no idea of their talents.

Many of these student will be transfering next year to other colleges and universities, but their mark has been left of EC's campus for years to come. Many of these students are the best in their sport on a state level, as well as college record breakers.

All the photos were taken by me except for: Tobias Klingede (action photo) courtesy of Fernando Jimenez, Union and Kyle Petter (action photo) courtesy of Toney Fernandez.

The EC All-Stars Part One

Hey there everyone this is Heather with a project I have been working on called the EC All-Stars. This was a photo essay type article that was cut from the book. There was not enough money in our budget and some thing that didn't work had to go. I want to share my hard work and I don't want to let the students down I had to bother.

The coaches of most every sport had given me information on their best, hardworking and highest stat players. After I was able to contact them and compile the information to make these "baseball" style cards of each individual. I just want to share them with everyone because I am so happy with the out come of the cards. For information on joining or watching EC sports visit www.elcamino.edu

"We take pride in winning; we take pride in being a good person and a hard working person. A lot of student athletes they’ve got double the duty, because they have to go to school and study and play football or any other sport." John Featherstone, Football Coach, said.

Making Stars on Campus

The student magazine Warrior Life is coming to a crunch time. Most of the media is in and final photos are getting taken and stories being edited. It is getting intense!

This week I have been non-stop on getting photos of EC sports players for the All-Star story I am doing. It has been a challenge to set up the shots I need with 10 different student who are just as busy as I am.

"I'd say 90 percent of our kids that get division 1 scholarships end up graduating college and that's a tremendous thing for all of us involved," Coach Featherstone, Warrior Football, said.

While shooting these students I have really gotten connected to the athletic departments on campus. I have had the opportunity to befriend many of these student and get to know coaches and other players. The students that the coaches help me select for this story really are stars and make me proud to represent the El Camino Warriors.

Aso taking donations in Library

The weeks turn over on campus and papers have been published. There are many stories that never even make it to a page. That's what happened with one I was covering. Associated Student Organization (ASO) was starting to take donations on campus for refugees of Haiti and Chile.

Although this story never ran in the paper I really feel it is an important issue. The donations will be taken for a few weeks in the Library and Student Services Center. The donations will be given directly to the American Red Cross, and go services in the affected countries.

“If every student donates $1, we could raise at least $15,000,” Elizabeth Mercado, ASO Director of Student Community Advancement, said.

Oceans Film Review

Hello it is Heather and I am back with some info on my latest assignment on the Disney documentary film "Oceans." This article I wrote never made it into the Arts page of the Union Newspaper, but was still worth the review none the less.

It was an amazing show of cinematography. I was amazed at the visual aspects and animals in the film. Yet the narration of it was extremely boring because of how monotone the voice was. He should stick to James Bond because documentary film is not for him.

This was a really well put together film and I was in awe, but bored at the same time. I loved the idea of the film, but I feel it was a bad execution.

The flow of the film was off. It was some animals like dolphins and whales and then there were some other animals and back to dolphins and whales. It was very random and annoying.

Yet all the scenes of the animals were captivating. There were some close up shots of animals have never seen before. Not to mention this was filmed all over the world in different oceans and coasts. Certain aspects were very impressive, yet the parts that were bad pretty much killed the film for me. I do not recommend spending the $12 to see this film in theaters. But I am grateful that being a journalist has given me the opportunity to enjoy the evening out.

JACC

Competing and attending workshops at Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) convention held at the Wilshire Grand Hotel, and 20 members EC News staff were able to attend and had opportunities to learn life long lessons in journalism.

This event was the best journalism training I have ever had! It was living the life of a journalist through this three day long event. It was the most stress and fun I have had for a long time and gave me a breath of fresh air to fight for my dream of being a photojournalist. It also helped me confirm that this is what I want to do with my life, before it is too late. I recommend going to workshops and events based on your major to gain knowledge and also help point you in the direction you really want to take your life.

The best part was being able to compete in the photo competitions. I was able to do the news photo competition and the feature competition. They were intense and stressful! For our feature photo the assignment was to go out with all the other competitors and find your photo on Hollywood Boulevard. It was like really being out and looking for a wild art photo or even fining that feature story.

While I was there I got closer with my news staff and I have gained friends for life out of this experience. I also got to interact with known media members that took their time to teach in presentations that are tools I will use on everyday assignments. I am so grateful to yet again have another opportunity to grow as a photojournalist and am excited to put my new tips to work.

Passion Photo Exhibit

I am back and out on assignment with the semester moving along nicely. I am really excited to announce that the Photography department on campus is hosting a student photo exhibit in the library. The show will begin Friday, April 2, and feature works from over 70 different students. I have a piece that will be going up too!

It is very exciting because I was able to choose the photo I wanted to put up.
Usually the photo assignment are dictated based on the story assignments in the news. I have a heavy schedule and find little time for leisure photography. In this instance I was able to put the usual news element aside and do what I love. Which is hockey and shooting photos.

In the end I am very excited to present my and every EC student's photographs in the Library. Many of our own Union photographers are involved in the display as well! It's going to be a great reception with music and more. We're Back and to Random Lengths

Hello world EC Union is back in spring semester with our issue 10 out. It was the first time in remembered history that we put out a 10 page first issue in a semester. I'm really proud of the staff. We are over prepared with editors, writers and photographers. There is a ton of talent and with a first effort looking that good I can't wait to see what develops in later issues.

Also I have began to do photojournalism projects as an internship for my local San Pedro publication. It's very exciting and it really my first step in outside of the Union to be a photojournalist. It is really an experience for me and I can't thank Lori Medigovich for giving me the opportunity.
